The Japanese were aggressively honing their new liter-class sportbike weapons for 2004, and Harley-Davidson was busy celebrating its centennial. Meanwhile, BMW was quietly revamping its motorcycle factory near Berlin to prepare for a new-model offensive. On the front line are three upgraded singles and an improved K1200LT luxotourer (see Kickstarts), but the main strike force is yet to come. The bikes we know about include a liter-class sportbike with a transverse in-line four--which we probably won't see before the big German motorcycle show in September 2004. But the really big gun (sales-wise, anyway) may have moved into position by the time you're reading this in late March. The R-GS has become BMW's best-selling model worldwide, and the completely revised 2005 R1200GS model promises to extend that lead even further.

Adventure-touring fans are familiar with the previous R1150GS and R1150GS Adventure models, which are still offered as 2004 models. These ground-pounding, Swiss Army knives of motorcycling have the rugged style and useful equipment popular with two-wheeled explorers (and wannabes) worldwide, and hundreds of thousands have been sold. Consequently, however, all of those demanding fans have generated a pretty big wish list.
