Oct. 21--Southwest Airlines Co.'s conquest of America's skies took an unexpected detour Thursday as the discounter announced its return after a 20-year absence to Denver.

"It's something we've looked at for quite some time," said Gary Kelly, chief executive of Dallas-based Southwest. "It's a very large opportunity for us."

But if officials at Denver's airport were elated, their counterparts at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport were furious. D/FW marketing vice president Joe Lopano said he considered himself a "jilted bride."

D/FW has been publicly begging Southwest to ditch its efforts to repeal flight restrictions at the carrier's home airport, Dallas Love Field, and instead launch long-haul flights at the larger regional airport.

Southwest executives have said repeatedly they're not interested in serving D/FW, largely because it doesn't suit the low-fare airline's business model as well as Love Field.
