The financially troubled Economic Opportunity Board could be stripped of programs and some $40 million in state funding if the nonprofit organization cannot correct deficiencies identified in a federal investigation.
The organization, tasked with helping the county's poorest residents, is at least $3.3 million in debt, has had its credit line reduced and has few assets to sell to generate the money needed to cover its liabilities, according to a federal report released Wednesday.
Michael Willden, director of the state's Human Resources Department, called for the federal investigation last month after the board was unable to account for $2.1 million. The state had advanced the money to help the organization with cash flow problems in its child...
