Oct. 16--OCALA, Fla. -- Nearly three decades after the Crystal River nuclear power plant began operating, the company that owns it is considering adding a second one to the same site.
Progress Energy has announced that projected demand for electricity in its service area could require the addition of a new "baseload" power plant in Florida within the next decade.
Whether that plant will be coal-fired or nuclear-fueled is an open question at this point, company spokesman Rick Kimble said.
"'We're not saying we'll build a nuclear plant. What we are saying is we want to keep our options open," he said. "We think it ought to be an option. We think it's a good thing."
