Oct. 15--OCALA, Fla. -- Robert Scanlon, who rose from humble beginnings in his native Ireland to rub shoulders with thoroughbred racing royalty, died Thursday night from complications of liver cancer. He was 57.
Scanlon, who operated the family-run Robert Scanlon Training Center near Williston, was diagnosed with cancer in April while in the midst of one of his most successful years ever. The Scanlon team, which includes his wife Connie and son David, set a world record in February when it sold a 2-year-old colt at public thoroughbred auction for $5.2 million.
He was also known for his connection to Afleet Alex, the popular runner who won the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes earlier this year.
Scanlon and company had prepped the Ocala-born colt for sale in 2004, netting $75,000 for then owner Joseph Allen at a Maryland auction.
