Oct. 13--AUGUSTA -- An arbitrator has awarded 415 state social workers a raise and a percentage of back wages going to 1998.
The total amount to be paid to workers -- mostly former caseworkers for agencies recently combined into the new Department of Health and Human Services -- could reach $6 million, based on estimates announced by the Maine State Employees Association, the largest union representing state workers.
