Oct. 11--OCALA. Fla. -- While the fireworks at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Fall Mixed Sale aren't as loud as they were years ago, Monday's opening session shows the annual event can still make some noise.
A filly named Truely Genuine was purchased for $200,000 by billionaire industrialist Jess Jackson, topping all prices hammered in the auction that annually showcases both the baby racing prospects known as weanlings, and broodmares, the moms that produce them.
And while the sale-topper didn't approach the OBS-record $1.7 million recorded in 1982 for the dam of Horse of the Year Conquistador Cielo, the filly's breeder couldn't have been happier with Monday's outcome.
"We've worked hard all of our lives," said Lybby Gay, who along with her husband Ron, bred Truely Genuine at their L&R Farm near Ocala.
