How long do you think your ATV could run without an air filter? Truth is, it could run a long time. There is another side to that truth, however. While it could run a long time, you'd be doing serious damage to the internal workings of the engine.

Imagine taking a handful of dirt and shoving it into the carburetor. That, in essence, is what you'd be doing if you did not have an air filter. Yeah, it is important. Running an air filter isn't 100 percent of your responsibility, though. It takes more than just having an air filter in place. You have to clean it regularly, too.
Another example. Close your mouth. Good. Now pinch your nose and then do two laps around your home. Did you try it? It wasn't easy, right? Well, as your air filter gets clogged with all the rotten stuff you do not want entering your ATV's engine, it also restricts the air supply to the engine.
Without an adequate air supply, the ATV engine cannot make good horsepower--kind of like when you almost passed out during the first lap around your home.
And, if that doesn't convince you, maybe this will: A top-end rebuild on a modern four-stroke costs about $250. Cleaning an air filter costs about $3. You do the math.
