Environmental interests in Southern California for years have encouraged companies to shift harbor truck traffic to intermodal rail, while reducing air pollution from locomotives and rail switching operations. Now BNSF Railway says it intends to deliver on those requests.

The railroad is testing several pollution-reducing measures at its crowded Hobart intermodal yard near downtown Los Angeles. Meanwhile, BNSF hopes similar environmentally friendly initiatives will help smooth the path for a near-dock intermodal facility the railroad plans to build four miles from the harbor.
