LAMPE, Mo. _ Casting a Royal Wulff to a rainbow trout from the banks of a narrow, crystal-clear stream, I would have thought I was fly-fishing in the fabled waters of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York or the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Montana rather than the Ozark Mountains of Missouri.
As I discovered during a visit to Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, the trout fishing in the Show Me state rivals that of more storied destinations, offering idyllic settings and big fish. Best of all, unlike better-known trout streams that get inundated with anglers, the trout waters of the Ozarks receive relatively little fishing pressure.
"It may not be Colorado and it may not be Wyoming, but as a fly-fishing destination it has a lot to offer," Keith Oxby said.
