High-risk adolescents with asthma are more likely to experience psychological distress than those without asthma, according to new research that studied the relationship between asthma and psychological distress in a sample already at-risk for adjustment problems.
Twenty-five older adolescents with asthma (ages 16 to 24) and a matched sample of controls without asthma (N=25) were recruited from a Job Corps. facility and assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory II, the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Brief Symptom Inventory. All participants were below the state poverty level and showed evidence of academic or vocational deficits.
