The onslaught of a billion or more new mobile gadgets a year is a given. But the technology behind these ever-multiplying, ever-sophisticated electronic devices is up for grabs.
At the forefront is M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers. It has emerged as a front-runner among companies developing speck-sized memory for svelte mobile phones and portable multimedia devices that can do everything from play music to download movies.
The company's business centers on the high end of a technology called flash memory, in which fingernail-sized computer chips store billions of nuggets of data.
Besides gadgets, M-Systems' memory technology runs those thumb-sized plastic stubs called flash drives, which are used to tote files from one computer to another.
