The 2005 FINA World Swimming Championships came to a successful close in Montreal, despite the city almost losing the international competition because of a lack of adequate preparation. The July event, which FINA temporarily canceled in January, hosted 1,784 swimmers, divers and water polo players. Though it fell 40,000 tickets short of its 200,000 goal, FINA President Mustapha Larfaoui praised Montreal's efforts to pull the event together at the zero hour.
