FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ A new voice rings over college football this Sunday.
Actually, with 114 voices uniting, it's more like a choir.
The Harris Interactive College Football Poll makes its debut as the newest in a long history of ranking systems invented to assess the relative strength of teams. If history has taught us anything about football polls, it's that we shouldn't expect sweet harmony.
Just look at this week's USA Today coaches' poll.
Michigan is ranked No. 13, five spots ahead of Notre Dame, even though they're both 2-1 and the Fighting Irish defeated the Wolverines at Michigan Stadium just two weeks ago. Worse yet, Michigan State (3-0) is ranked below both of them at No. 22 even though the Spartans just beat the Irish at Notre Dame. The Associated Press media poll isn't much better, ranking the trio in the same order, though not nearly as far apart.
The Harris poll immediately assumes importance as the replacement for the AP poll as one-third of the components in the Bowl Championship Series standings used to determine who plays for the national title. The first BCS standings will be released Oct. 17.
