Thanks for the article promoting use of oxygen by lifeguards (June 2005). For some reason, lifeguards have long been treated as second-class medical aid providers with respect to their access to this lifesaving gas. It's ironic and frustrating since drowning victims are typically oxygen starved.

The International Life Saving Federation, the worldwide alliance of national lifesaving bodies, has long advocated availability of oxygen to properly trained lifeguards, stating, "The physiological concept of the benefit of providing oxygen to spontaneously breathing drowning victims or during CPR in drowning victims in respiratory arrest is clear and advocates that oxygen should be used in all drowning victims."

The full statement, developed by the ILS Medical Committee and approved by the ILS Board of Directors in 2003, is available online, along with many other medical position statements at: http:// www.ilsf.org/medical/statements.htm.
