How to Make the Most of Your College Visit

If you are serious about choosing the right college, a campus visit is the way to go. It's the only way to get a first-hand look at a college and try it on for size. The only problem is that the actual time you get to spend on a college campus during your junior or senior year is limited. Here are some tips to make the most of that limited time.

1. Check your high school's policy for going on campus visits. Most high schools allow students the opportunity to do a couple of college visits during their senior year, and more and more schools are allowing visits during the junior year. Check to make sure just how many college visits you are allowed and then choose your colleges accordingly.

2. Do your homework before each visit. Check the college's website and printed materials ahead of time. If you still have questions about the college, write them down and make sure they get answered during your visit.

3. Check the college's schedule for campus visits. While most ecolleges will allow you to come any time, they also have special visit days set aside. Those visit days might be more beneficial, since colleges plan specific meetings of interest to prospective students on those days.

4. Make arrangements with the college early. Plans should be set at least two weeks ahead of time so the college is ready for you, and you are ready for the visit.

5. Plan your campus visit so that you are on campus at least one day during the school week, Monday through Friday. This will give you the best picture of what life is like for a college student. You will also have a better chance of meeting with professors within your areas of interest.

6. Plan to stay overnight. Most colleges will allow you to stay at least one night in one of their dormitories. It's a good introduction to what dorm life will be like, and it will allow you to interact with current students in a way that you couldn't if you only talked to them during the day.

7. Make the most of your campus tour by listening and asking questions. The campus tour will give you a good overall picture of the campus. The questions you ask will help you get at some of the specifics you are interested in.

8. Visit with professors in your area of interest, coaches, music and theatre personnel, as well as with the admissions counselor. This will give you a muiti-faceted view of the campus.

9. And of course, don't forget to relax and enjoy yourself. The college you are visiting could very well be your home for the next four years. Make sure it's a comfortable fit.
