Satellite TV broadcasters' plans to overtake cable rivals in high-definition programming remain a bit fuzzy and behind schedule.
Satellite firms DirecTV and EchoStar are waiting for a new generation of set-top boxes that will let their networks broadcast more content in high definition.
Hopes by satellite firms to leapfrog cable rivals in ultrasharp HD programming are tied to the arrival of these new set-tops, as well as more satellite launches. They had expected both items by late 2005, looking to make a holiday sales push. Now satellite TV firms probably will have to wait until 2006 to make a big HDTV marketing splash.
"Not all the pieces are in place," said Phillip Swann, president and publisher of TVPredictions.com. "They're not quite there yet."
