Katrina Rips Gulf, New Orleans
1Hurricane Katrina plowed into the Gulf Coast with 145-mph winds, blinding rain and a 20-foot storm surge, spreading destruction across La., Miss., and Ala. Its eye passed east of New Orleans, sparing it from feared catastrophic damage, but thousands of homes were damaged as flooding plagued hundreds of miles of coastal areas. Damage estimates ranged from $12 bil-$24 bil.
