On the first day in Israel, just hours after deplaning, we dropped our luggage at the Dan Panorama Hotel in Jerusalem and walked to Ben Yehudah Street, the downtown strip. It's been the site of numerous terrorist bombings in the past several years, but it's also the best place for tourists to eat and souvenir-shop.
The women in my Hadassah tour group were ecstatic about being in Israel. A few didn't know where to head first. Shiny jewelry and candlesticks made of Jerusalem stone displayed in shop windows called to them. Others headed for T-shirt shops to get gifts for their children.
But food, as always, won out with me.
Some in the group ran to traditionally Israeli restaurants that serve falafel, hummus, pita and other Middle Eastern fare. Others went in hunt of chic cafes with menus, tablecloths and waiters.
I had my own plans, and they included fast food. I had been waiting for this moment. It didn't matter if anybody came with me or not. It was my priority in the Holy Land. I didn't even need to change my clothes after the overnight flight.
