It's not just at the beach that you need to protect your skin from the sun. You're exposed to potentially harmful rays every day, from the moment you walk outside. So if you use a daily moisturiser on your face, you might want to go for one that provides sun protection as well, rather than applying two separate products. Not only will it help prevent your skin from drying out, it can help prevent sunburn and photo-aging too.

Our trialists checked out 30 brands of facial moisturiser with sunscreen to see which ones rated best from a cosmetic point of view. We didn't ask trialists to assess their sun protection, as all products with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 4 or more are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and must conform to the relevant Australian standard.

PRICE NO GUARANTEE

You can spend a small fortune on a moisturiser with sunscreen--boutique brands CHANEL, YVES SAINT LAURENT and CLINIQUE all cost $90 or more per 50 mL; or comparatively small change--CLASSICS Daily Moisturising Cream is just 69 cents for 50 g. In our trial, though, price wasn't a good indicator of how well they rated, as the table, page 10, shows.

The products that rated best overall also tended to rate well for fragrance, texture and absorption, and received the best ratings for how well trialists thought they worked as a moisturiser. And four of the top five also cost less than $30 for 50 mL or 50 g.

FACTOR IT IN

Moisturisers with sunscreen can help protect you from the sun, but experts advise the following:

* When choosing a moisturiser containing sunscreen, pick one labelled with an SPF of 15 or more, and check to see it's well within its use-by date.
