FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ You knew gasoline costs were grabbing hold of your budget. But did you know that some Hess gasoline stations in West Palm Beach, Fla., were literally putting a hold on your checking account for as much as $100 if you used a debit card to make your purchase?
A "hold" can last for as long as three business days. That means you may not have access to all the cash you thought you had until the transaction clears.
The situation has generated a frenzy of finger-pointing among banks, credit-card systems and Amerada Hess, the oil company that's at the center of the mess.
