THE QUESTIONS NEVER CHANGED in his first spring training with the Cardinals. Reggie Sanders' answers, polite and uttered with a smile, never changed, either.
In February 2004, Sanders arrived at Jupiter, Florida, as baseball's traveling man, playing for his sixth team in six seasons. The questions were as much about playing on World Series teams in 2001 and '02 or coming off a 30-home run season as they were about what city had the best fans, the best ballpark, the best pasta.
Now, finally, the questions are different.
Eighteen years after the Cincinnati Reds drafted him out of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Methodist College, Sanders was approaching a milestone.
Through June 22, Sanders needed only 16 home runs and four stolen bases to become the fifth player in the game's history to reach 300 home runs and 300 steals.
Sanders was asked if the numbers are meaningful for him.
"Are you kidding me?" Sanders answered. "That's a huge feat."
