Once again, the ski slopes of western Maryland came to life with ATVs as GNCC racing returned to the Wisp Ski Resort. It is a welcome race for many as the Wisp is the final round before the GNCC series takes its annual two-month break for the summer heat. But that is not the only reason racers enjoy this round. The resort, with its fantastic views of Deep Creek Lake and lush green ski slopes, provides a relaxing atmosphere before racers tackle the brutal 11-mile track.

And by brutal, of course, we mean impossible! The track fools racers by starting out smooth as it twists and turns along the grass ski slopes, but then it turns into the woods and starts to eat ATVs one by one. The Wisp represents some of the roughest conditions riders would face all season with rocks, boulders and roots at every turn. And, with temps in the 90s and extremely dry conditions, dust and exhaustion would prove formidable obstacles all day long.
