It has been said that anyone can win the Baja 500. That is not to say this is an easy race; it isn't. It also isn't intended to take anything away from the accomplishment of the winners. In fact, it is one of the toughest races to win.
There are only three races a year that are "The Baja Races". There's the San Felipe 250, then the Baja 500, followed by the grand daddy of them all, the Baja 1000. The San Felipe 250 is a bit of a mad dash, only the fastest teams have a chance at this one. It's a tough race, and many machines do not finish. But most do, and it can be a tight field. The Cyle Chislock, Josh Fredericks and Levi Marana team won the 250 this year by a mere 4 seconds on second place.
The Baja 1000 is a nightmare for many. It is an incredible accomplishment just to finish this race. In reality, only the best-funded, most-experienced and most-prepared teams have a good shot at winning this one.
The Baja 500, however, is a different beast. It's tough to finish, but it can be done. It's a fast race, but it can't be sprinted like the 250. Sometimes the fastest teams hold it together and take the win, sometimes they do not. Sometimes this race is won by pure speed, but usually planning and experience play a big part. So when they say anyone can win the Baja 500, they're really saying that this is anybody's race....
