DURING HIS FIRST MONTH IN NEW YORK IN 1978 AS A MEMEBER OF THE YANKEES, CLOSER RICH GOSSAGE STRUGGLED TO earn the respect of Yankee fans as he suffered with a 1-3 won-lost record, no saves and one blown save to his credit in his first seven games.

Here's Gossage's account of his first month and a half in pinstripes:

It's hard to say which was more unruly during my first six weeks in New York--my pitching or the New York fans' behavior. While I was being chauffeured in from the bullpen in a Toyota Celica, fans would pelt the car with beer, peanuts, and hot dogs. Nobody bothered to hold the mustard or mayo.

By the time the car reached the dugout area, the windshield would be plastered with condiments. When I stepped out, I needed an umbrella, or poncho, to keep dry.
