IN FASHIONING ONE OF THE MEMORABLE IRONIES OF THE CURRENT SEASON, Rafael Palmeiro and Greg Maddux traveled different roads to reach career milestones attained by only a small group of major leaguers.
During the month of July, Palmeiro collected his 3,000th hit to go with his then 566 home runs, and Maddux rang up his 3,000th strikeout to accompany his 313 victories.
Those are impressive numbers, but as they relate to Palmeiro they may be irrelevant when he becomes eligible for the Hall of Fame in the not-too-distant future.
In being suspended last August for testing positive regarding the use of the banned steroid known as stanozolol, Palmeiro shattered his reputation and his credibility.
Remember last March when Palmeiro pointed a finger at members of a Congressional panel investigating the use of steroids in major league baseball, proclaiming he never took steroids, period?
His performance reminded some observers of a former president who also pointed his finger before TV cameras to deny he had intimate relations "with that woman."
Maybe we shouldn't believe people who point their fingers while denying the obvious.
