HERSHEY, PA. -- Standard screening allergens are no match for the proliferating cosmetic and personal care products now in use, and the number of patients who will have contact dermatitis to ingredients that will not be identified with standard screening allergens will likely rise, Lisa A. Garner, M.D., said at a meeting on contact dermatitis sponsored by Pennsylvania State University.
Physicians can combat this trend by patch testing patients with their own products and by gaining the cooperation of manufacturers of suspected products to help identify the ingredients responsible for contact dermatitis, said Dr. Garner, a dermatologist in private practice in Garland, Tex.
