CHICACO -- One of the most exciting trends to emerge in dermatology in the last year is the use of biologic therapies for diseases other than psoriasis, according to Kenneth B. Gordon, M.D.
"I think that's going to be the next line for biologics," Dr. Gor don said at the American Academy of Dermatology's Academy 2005 meeting.
A model for why this approach works is recent research with alefacept in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a frequent complication of stem cell/bone marrow transplant. GVHD is a T-cell--mediated disease, and alefacept selectively reduces activated T cells.
