NEW ORLEANS -- Potentially harmful medications are commonly used during pregnancy, suggesting a need for improved awareness and education of patients, Dr. Jerrie Refuerzo reported during a poster presentation held as part of the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Of 418 postpartum women who responded to a survey about prescription and over-the-counter medication use during pregnancy, 59 (14%) reported using potentially harmful medications.
Of these, 42 reported using ibuprofen, 20 said that they had used aspirin, and 4 of these patients said that they had used both ibuprofen and aspirin. One additional patient reported using the prescription drug doxycycline to treat an infection, said Dr. Refuerzo of Wayne State University, Detroit.
