NEW ORLEANS -- Low plasma adiponectin in early pregnancy is associated with development of gestational diabetes, Dr. Surab Vadachkoria reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
In a nested case-control study of 41 pregnant women who developed gestational diabetes and 70 pregnant control patients, adiponectin concentrations in early pregnancy were significantly lower among the case patients (median concentrations of 4.4 vs. 8.1 [micro]g/mL). Blood samples were taken at a mean of 13 weeks' gestation, according to Dr. Vadachkoria of the Swedish Medical Center, Seattle.
