More than a third of new HIV cases in the United States between 1999 and 2002 were heterosexually acquired, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Of those, 35% were in persons aged 30-39 years, 64% occurred in females (with the highest proportion in those aged 13-19 years), and 74% occurred in non-Hispanic blacks.
