Protection is the next best thing to abstinence, and that applies to flatirons, too. New sprays from Matrix, Charles Worthington, Rusk, and Joico guard specifically against the hair-frying temperatures of the tool. All contain a key ingredient that keeps hair safe: silicone. "Silicones are great barrier-forming ingredients, plus they're slick, so they allow the iron to pass through hair without scorching any one spot," says cosmetics chemist Mort Westman. "This is why they're found in almost all heat-protecting products." When using a flatiron, a spray is superior to a serum or cream: "Because it coats hair evenly, it provides more complete protection," Westman says. We feel safer already. Bottom Line: The sprays left our hair straight and shiny. The next morning, though, it took a good shampoo to remove the oily silicones.
