Aug. 30--South Florida's gleaming new condominiums were put to the acid test by Hurricane Katrina last week, and while no widespread weaknesses have surfaced, some buildings revealed unexpected shortcomings.
Among the reports: windows popping out from the Category 1 winds that exposed interiors like carpet and sheetrock to damaging wind and rain; water seeping through the edges of window panes and under sliding balcony doors; lobbies flooding, and rainwater finding its way into elevator shafts, prompting the lifts to malfunction.
