Aug. 30--As parts of Miami-Dade County are struggling to recover from Hurricane Katrina, Mayor Carlos Alvarez on Monday turned his attention to a different issue: Parrot Jungle.
Troubled that the county has had to pay $3.66 million in loan payments for the Watson Island attraction, the mayor issued a memo pressing County Manager George Burgess to resolve the debt service for the minizoo. In a January memo, the mayor told Burgess to work out a deal with Parrot Jungle and the city of Miami, which seven years ago said it would take most of the financial risk...
