Bishop von Galen: German Catholicism and National Socialism. By Beth A. Griech-Polelle. (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2002. Pp. 259. $35.00.)

Publishers do a disservice to the reading public when they push authors to write books that cross the lines of their expertise. Such is the case with Beth A. Griech-Polelle's study of Bishop yon Galen, the subtitle of which points to the stretched area of German Catholicism and National Socialism. Griech-Polelle's biography of von Galen is certainly a worthwhile effort, but she treads on much-traveled roads when she deals with the broader issues of German church history without telling us anything new.
