Needle Points
Needle Points Women are getting pricked yet again in pursuit of a younger-looking face. The so-called acupuncture face-lift is the latest fad among celebrities, who endure the ten or so needles in strategic points in the face allegedly to relax muscles, boost circulation, and stimulate the production of collagen. "This doesn't duplicate the effects of a real face-lift," says Santa Monica acupuncturist Maoshing Ni, "but it can diminish fine lines, soften deep wrinkles, and firm undereye bags." Not all Western doctors are convinced, however. "Acupuncture is incredible when used in pain management," says cosmetic plastic surgeon Lawrence Reed. "But there's nothing in the mechanism that firms muscles or causes skin to tighten." Bottom Line: Acupuncture calms, so it may relax facial lines -- but it's no substitute for a scalpel. -- JENNY BAILLY
