Private Eye

How do you react when you see another star? By Jeffrey Slonim

Even celebrities become weak-kneed when they spot another boldfaced name in the ladies' room at Mortons or the aisles of Rexall. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the IFP Independent Spirit Awards, a Miramax/Glamour magazine party, and the premiere of Jersey Girl, we asked what happens when two stars collide. During one close encounter, Carson Kressley said under his breath, "Holy bleep-bleep, it's Tom Cruise!" Morgan Freeman staggered when he saw Gregory Peck at a past Academy Awards: "I just knelt down. And he said, 'Get up, get up.'" Others stand tall and feign nonchalance. Chaka Khan gets chummy (perhaps too chummy), gushing, "You look great! Let's exchange numbers." Dave Matthews explains, "I pretend I know them and say hi." And Jack Osbourne barely blinks: "I used to go up to people and say things, but now I know them all."

Renee Zellweger It's getting easier. I recognize a lot of faces now, and I have friends, so I look forward to seeing the familiar faces.
