Every now and then a book comes out that allows for a radical requestioning of its subject area, articulating provocative questions around the discipline and its documentation. Oscar Cornago Bernal has given us not just one book but two, published in consecutive years, that fit within this category. Both are impeccably researched and beautifully written. Both ask us radically to rethink areas of Spanish theatre history that have been primarily viewed through the prisms of not terribly distinguished dramatists who failed to carve a place within the international arena. In re-presenting the 1960s in Discurso teorico y puesta en escena en los anos sesenta and the final decade of the Franco era (1965-75) in La vanguardia teatral en Espana, Cornago Bernal offers a fresh examination of a period which has too often been viewed as theatrically tame and turgid.
