Aug. 31--Oil platforms broke from their moorings and floated across the Gulf of Mexico. At least nine refineries shut down, with some facing intense flooding and storm surges. And pipelines were forced to slash output to deal with damage.
Hurricane Katrina's effects on some of the nation's most critical energy infrastructure was only beginning to emerge Tuesday from helicopter flyovers, remote tracking devices and divers exploring damage to platforms and rigs.
It could take weeks, if not months, to inspect each piece of equipment and fully assess the impact at thousands of sites across the region.
And so far, the operation is underway without electrical power as utilities begin a weeks-long process of rebuilding...
