Aug. 28--Serafin Blanco wanted to name his big discount store Que Barato -- or That's a Bargain -- but he got a little help from customers before he settled on a name.
"Customers would look at the prices and say, 'nooo que barato,' and it stuck," he said.
nooo Que Barato is the name and it is like saying "Damn, that's a Bargain!"
And a bargain it is.
The store's prices speak for themselves. School uniforms can be purchased at nooo for $3.99 for a shirt, $4.99 for shorts and $7.99 for pants. Guayaberas of all types and sizes start as low as $9.99 and the popular gusano or duffle bags many exiles use when traveling to Cuba start at $5.99.
Blanco opened nooo Que Barato on Independence Day 1996 after a line of other retail stores like Clothing Machine in 1991 and Los Locos Fashions in 1982 did not do well. In 1980, he began VPM...
