Aug. 27--If you think you're paying a lot for gas, try putting yourself in the shoes of Charles Doyle, a trucker from Wichita Falls.

Mr. Doyle recently paid more than $550 to buy diesel fuel for his rig's twin 150-gallon tanks, which weren't even empty.

All told, he spent about $4,500 on fuel last month, reflecting the nearly 40 percent spike in diesel prices over the past year.

"When diesel prices go up, I take a pay cut," said Mr. Doyle. "When they go down, I get a raise. But lately they've only been going up."
