Aug. 26--The Brothers Grimm feels like a greatest-hits collection of everything director Terry Gilliam is known for: It's a comic adventure jam-packed with monsters, whimsy, slapstick, striking images, weird accents and all sorts of intriguing oddities. It is also, unfortunately, a dreary, uninvolving mess -- a joyless fantasy.
Much has been written about Gilliam's behind-the-scenes clashes with Miramax co-chiefs Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who bankrolled the $75 million production (the disputes became so intense, Gilliam shut down production on the movie for six months, ran off to make another film, then came back to finish).
