Aug. 26--AUSTIN, Texas -- Living in the reputed Live Music Capital of the World, computer tech and aspiring singer Michelle LaPoint is surrounded by some of the most talented struggling artists in the country.
"Everyone in Austin is a musician of some kind, even the people who have everyday jobs," said Ms. LaPoint, 27, a native of the Marshall Islands.
She may yet get her shot at rising above the crowd.
On Thursday, Ms. LaPoint beat out thousands of singing sensations -- some true talents, others not so much -- to become one of the lucky few to make it past the first round of tryouts in Austin for American Idol.
Performers who have been trying to get their music heard in Austin for years might think it's a long-shot gig -- but maybe easier to get than stage time on Sixth Street on a Saturday night.
