FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ She was full of surprises.
Hurricane Katrina formed as a depression on Aug. 13 but quickly fizzled. Ten days later, seemingly out of nowhere, she became a sudden threat to South Florida.
As Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach braced for landfall, Katrina unexpectedly jogged south, when storms normally go north.
Then, as Katrina approached, forecasters warned that all of South Florida faced heavy rains and severe flooding. But the system offered yet another surprise: Most of the rain was embedded south of the eye wall, when normally it's to the north....
