Five months after my breasts were removed in a radical double mastectomy, I went to the Caribbean for a weeklong yoga retreat with my good friend the designer Donna Karan. At the end of a class, I was lying on my back in the resting pose when all of a sudden something terrible started happening to my body. It was as if hot snakes were wriggling through me, intertwining themselves among my vertebrae. I started shaking, sweating, and whimpering with fear. My mouth tasted like metal.
