Remember the 1997 film L.A. Confidential? Russell Crowe plays Bud White, a fifties Los Angeles detective with an avenging temper when it comes to wife abusers. When he sees, in the back of a parked car, a woman with a bandaged nose and black-and-blue eyes, he explodes, roughing up a man who is with her. He then asks the woman if she's OK. Kim Basinger, her friend, walks over and explains coolly, "It's not what you think."
The woman had just had a nose job-not a run-in with her husband.
