Aug. 26--Looking to reduce fuel bills by cutting the weight of its airplanes, American Airlines is pumping less water onboard for galleys and lavatories.

A Plano company is showing off a new gizmo at a Dallas trade show to help truck drivers conserve precious diesel by idling their vehicles less.

Irving-based La Quinta Corp. has asked its innkeepers to use soft-drink machines that dim when guests aren't nearby and to do the laundry at night when energy costs are lower.

As crude oil prices set records each day, the effects are soaking through the U.S. economy in ways large and small, expected and hidden. And the search is on for ways to keep fossil-fuel bills from gobbling up profits.

So far, certainly, higher oil and gas prices have not stopped the U.S. economy. Economic growth remains robust. Employers added to payrolls in July. And consumers continue to shop.

But the relentless surge of crude prices has eaten into corporate America's books. Executives...
