As its editor warns, this volume is neither an introduction to Kleist nor a work of reference. It contains eleven essays by scholars of standing, who in their disparate ways present and provoke thoughts on Kleist's mentality, his aesthetic radicalism, his insight into issues of modern linguistics, and the proper paths and limits of literary interpretation, It is a minor annoyance that they refer to different editions of his writings.
