Sleeping Fitfully

Sleeping Fitfully Although working out regularly has been shown to lead to more restful sleep, a single bout of intense exercise may have the opposite effect, according to a study presented at an American Physiological Society meeting. Seven men who weren't currently active performed weight training, aerobic exercise, or no exercise on five different occasions 30 days apart. After each workout, regardless of the type, the subjects reported that they had more trouble falling or staying asleep and woke more frequently during the night than when they didn't exercise. Physical discomfort was probably to blame, explains researcher William Tharion of the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. "Sleep may not be restful with sore muscles," he says. "But sticking with an exercise program will allow pain to subside and sleep to improve."
