Cheat Sheet

1 Shampoo hair, and rub a volumizing conditioner on the ends only. Rinse well, and squeeze out excess water. 2 Blot the hair with a towel. Spread a small dollop of mousse or gel between your hands before applying it at the roots. Or, if you prefer a spray volumizer, squirt enough to saturate the scalp. Comb through. 3 With the nozzle attached, blow-dry on high heat at low speed to remove excess moisture, using the fingers to lift the roots. If your hair is thick, flip the head over to reach the bottom layers. 4 Separate the upper layers of hair from the bottom, and clip them on top of the head. Wrap each lower section around a large round brush, then pull it and aim the blow-dryer at the hair from roots to ends. 5 When the lower pieces are dry, unpin the top. With the brush, lift the hair several inches off the head. Point the nozzle at the roots until they're dry. Then drag the brush through the remainder of the hair. 6 Set the top pieces in large Velcro rollers, pushing them slightly forward toward the forehead before clipping in place (this raises the hair gently off the scalp, creating fullness when they're removed). 7 After ten minutes, take out the rollers, massage the roots, and mist hair with a very fine layer of shine spray.

Toolbox

* A wide-tooth comb helps distribute mousse, volumizer, or gel through the hair. Kiehl's Detangling Comb (1) won't snag or break strands (kiehls.com). * Experts recommend using a large, round boar- bristle brush, such as Denman Curling Brush Collection D32L (2), to lift and hold hair while blow-drying. If static electricity is a problem, switch to a boar-and-nylon-bristle paddle brush (denman-usa.com). * Medium to large Velcro rollers (two and a half to three inches) produce additional body on the crown. Velcro Classic Stylers (3) grip the hair without pins. For extra support, secure them with slim duckbill fasteners, such as Vidal Sassoon Curl Definition Hair Clips (4), as hair cools (Velcro, sallybeauty.com; vidalsassoon.com). * Give fine hair a boost by gently teasing the area close to the scalp with a rattail comb. Use a flexible one with round, tapered teeth, such as the Mason Pearson Tail Comb (5) (masonpearson.com). * If you overdo the styling products, mist hair lightly with an aerosol hair spray, such as TreSemme Tres Two Ultra Fine Mist, or a dry shampoo, like Klorane Dry Shampoo (tresemme.com; Klorane, folica.com).
